(MILITARY--CIVIL WAR.) PATRIOTIC UNION COVERS. England's God.

(MILITARY--CIVIL WAR.) PATRIOTIC UNION COVERS. England's God. Hand-colored cover, 3-1/16 x 5-1/2 inches; depicting "King Cotton"" about to eat a slave alive, as he lies in chains, stretched across a bale of cotton. Excellent condition. Np, circa 1863-1864

  • Notes: a very rare patriotic cover, possibly unique. No other example located. While the very nature of the patriotic covers of the Civil War tended toward the extreme, this one gets the gold medal for its dual attack on Southern slavery and British consumption of Southern cotton. From the Gordon Bleuler Collection of Civil War covers.
