(MILITARY--CIVIL WAR.) The Gallant Charge of the Fifty Fourth Massachusetts (Colored) Regiment. Hand-tinted engraving with full margins, 9-5/8x14-1/8 inches inches; offset stains in the corners from old glue where tipped to the mat, the latter obscuring one inch of the margins. sold as is, conservable. New York: Currier and Ives, 1863

  • Notes: A classic image of the charge of the Fifty-Fourth Massachusetts Colored Regiment. Also, and more correctly called the "Assault on Battery Wagner." This engraving was issued within weeks of the actual battle, which took place on July 18, 1863. It was the first serious battle that involved colored troops. Lincoln felt very strongly about how colored soldiers might be treated by the Confederacy, and declared: "The Government of the United States will give the same protection to all its soldiers; and if the enemy shall sell or enslave any one because of his color, the offense shall be punished by retaliation upon the enemy's prisoners in our possession. It is therefore ordered, that for every soldier of the United States killed in violation of the laws of war a rebel soldier shall be executed."
