(MILITARY) MILLER, DORIS, "DORIE." Navy News Bulletin.

(MILITARY) MILLER, DORIS, "DORIE." Navy News Bulletin. 6 mimeographed folio sheets, printed on 10 of twelve sides. [Washington, D.C.], April 7, 1942

  • Notes: scarce ww ii naval department bulletin. Historian Charles Wesley's copy of the original navy department announcement of the formal acceptance of Negro volunteers together with a 10 page "News Bulletin . . . for the information of Naval Personnel. It is designed to assist its readers in gauging public opinion and reaction. Interesting statements which have received wide press or radio circulation are reproduced, even though some are known to be inaccurate or misleading." An early example of a document for the use of public relations people and the "spin doctors" at the Naval Department. At the top of the page in red pencil is "Doris Miller, pp 4, 9, 10." With Charles Wesley's name and that of Cecilia Jefferson [?] in blue ink at the top of the first page. Includes the first mention of Dorie Miller and his heroic performance at Pearl Harbor on December 7th, 1941. It was Miller's outstanding bravery together with public pressure that caused the government to change its policy regarding blacks in the Navy and its branches.
