  • Notes: first edition, rare. "In this, one of the most significant trials of our history, young Josiah Quincy and John Adams, at a point where public feeling had been fanned to flame by Samuel Adams and John Hancock, volunteered to defend the eight British soldiers charged with murder at the Boston Massacre." From the Streeter Sale Catalog (III:741). No single incident involving the death of an African American in defense of his country, stands out more than that of Crispus Attucks, the first man shot down in the Boston Massacre. The present account was taken down in shorthand by John Hodgson. Only one other copy of this work has come to auction since the Streeter sale in 1967. Evans 11683; Howes H561; McDade 122; Sabin 96951.
