(MILITARY.) Autograph Letter Signed by 4 officers, being an attestation of the bravery and loyalty of Lieutenant Thomas N. Conant of the 29th U. S. Colored Troops, 3rd Brigade, 2nd Division, 25th Corps. 2 pages, folio. From Camp in Virginia, 25 March 1865

  • Notes: Letter in support of Conant who resigned after the promotion of an officer with less experience. On the advice of his father, and after consideration from General Dana (Brigadier-General of the Volunteers), he retracted his resignation. Two weeks after this letter, the 25th, 29th, 31st, and 116th were positioned along the advance line of 17 Union regiments that moved from the West toward Appomatox Court House.
