(MILITARY.) HARMON, LEONARD ROY. A Fighting Ship. U.S.S. Harmon.

(MILITARY.) HARMON, LEONARD ROY. A Fighting Ship. U.S.S. Harmon. Poster. 22 x 28 inches. Washington, 1943

  • Notes: a fine example of a scarce ww ii poster. Many are aware of the naval hero Dorie Miller, but less known is Leonard Roy Harmon (1917-1942), WW II sailor and recipient of the Navy Cross. Following boot camp training in 1939, Harmon was assigned to duty on the San Francisco. Harmon, like most black enlistees, was assigned to mess duty. On the night of 12th of November 1942 the following day, the San Francisco was involved in one of the major battles of the Pacific theatre. At Guadalcanal, the San Francisco took over forty hits. Harmon, who had been re- assigned to a first aid unit in the pitch of the battle, was responsible for saving the life of a young corpsman he was working with. By pushing Lynford Bonsteel first, up and out of a hatch to safety, Harmon lost his life. In July of 1943, the destroyer escort, U. S. Harmon was commissioned. Harmon was further honored by having the batchelor quarters of the Naval Air Station at North Island, San Diego named Harmon Hall. African-American National Biography, Volume 4, page 66-67.
