(MILITARY.) TUSKEGEE AIRMEN. Autograph Letter Signed from Tuskegee Airman Lt. Faythe F. McGuiness, to Herbert Q. Hibler, a friend who later applied for clearance to service the Tuskegee planes. With the original papers from the Air Force giving Clearance for Officer Candidate School to Herbert Q. Hibler. The first on official Tuskegee Flying School letterhead; the second on Sheppard Field, Wichita Falls Air Force stationery. Single page with envelope and six pages, 8vo respectively. Alabama and Texas 1942-1945

  • Notes: A letter from Faythe McGuiness, Tuskegee Airman to his old friend Herbert Hibler, encouraging him and other friends to come to Tuskegee. McGuiness says: "I like this branch of service fine and hope that you will like yours for we are closely connected, that is in aviation. Work hard and try and learn well and I will do the same, for my life may some day depend on your work. And who knows, I might be able to save your life, smile." With this is a later group of papers, dated May 1945 giving clearance to Hibler to be part of the Tuskegee Airmen in "Aeonautical Maintenance." McGuiness was a member of the original 99th Pursuit Squadron. He was killed in a freak accident at the base.
