MILTON ROGOVIN (1909-2011) Joseph Kemp, Hanna Furnace, Buffalo N.Y., from the series Working People.

MILTON ROGOVIN (1909-2011)
Joseph Kemp, Hanna Furnace, Buffalo N.Y., from the series Working People. Silver print, the image measuring 7¼x7 inches (18.4x17.8 cm.), the sheet 10x8 inches (20.3x25.4 cm.), with Rogovin's signature and a Photography Annual 1980-81 citation in pencil on verso. 1978

This image was the cover for Rogovin's book Portraits in Steel with an interview by Michael Frisch (1993)

  • Condition: Milton Rogovin's portrait of a miner is in very good condition. The print is lush and contrasty, with a clean, bright surface.

In raking light it is possible to see a vertical handling crease at the far upper left edge, but this is not obtrusive or immediately apparent. There are also a couple very tiny and unobtrusive marks from handling near the lower edge, but these are only visible in strong, raking light and again, not obtrusive.

The margins are clean, with just faint evidence of handling. The far top left corner is chipped, and on verso there is a rectilinear area of discoloration from a piece of tape. With Rogovin's signature and his notation "Photography Annual 1980-81 / ID #310" in pencil on verso.

A rare work from this important social documentary photographer.
