  • Notes: Henry Fisher Pond (1848-1885) was a Massachusetts native who went west to live in Minnesota and Wisconsin; he was apparently unrelated to the Pond missionary family featured in our September 2017 Americana auction. By 1872, he had settled near St. Paul, but took a short trip across the state to satisfy his curiosity. This short account begins in the booming town of Mankato, where Pond visits the prison and views the town from the bluffs of Bunker Hill. He then takes a train across 64 miles of prairie to Windom (established just the year before), where he sleeps in a comically small hotel room, catches pickerel on Lake Cottonwood, and helps to capture a pair of hawks. This diary was mailed home to his family in Massachusetts, as part of a series--this fragment begins and ends with the words "continued", but an apparently complete letter to the family is penciled in the upper margin of all 4 pages. It is accompanied by 2 pen and ink drawings: one of an Asian pagoda, the other titled "Draw-Bridge at Winona 1872."
