(MISSISSIPPI BUBBLE.) Het Groote Tafereel der Dwaasheid, vertoonende de Opkomst, Voortgang en Ondergang der Actie, Bubbel, en Windnegotie, in Vrankryk, Engeland, en de Nederlanden, gepleegt in den Jaare MDCCXX. 73 (of 74) engraved plates, including many double-page or folding, with plates 22 and 65 in second state, and plates 26 and 29 cut into 4 segments each. [2], 25, [1]; 52; 31 [i. e., 29]; 8; 9 pages (but with last leaf of first part bound after title). 5 parts in one volume. Folio, 390x235 mm, contemporary vellum boards with blind-stamped arabesque centerpiece on covers, soiled, covers slightly warped; text leaves browned, scattered stains throughout, including dark stain in outer margin of several plates, occasional minor repairs on verso of plates. [Amsterdam?], 1720

  • Notes: first edition of the most elaborate publication inspired by the economic events of 1720, primarily satirizing Dutch manifestations of the speculative mania that led to the Mississippi Bubble in France and the South Sea Bubble in England. The regular complement of illustrations consists of 74 plates; this copy lacks only the last (Tooverkaart, Twede Stuk). It also has plates 2, 3, 4, and 5 from the supplementary series found in some copies, though not the supplementary engraved list of plates. Alden 720/114; Cole, The Great Mirror of Folly, pages 23-35.
