  • Notes: In the summer of 1964, college students and others from various walks of life travelled by bus to Mississippi to aid in a massive attempt to register voters--they were called the "freedom riders". Over a thousand people took part, establishing "freedom schools," where first time voters were helped through the paperwork necessary to get around old time Jim Crow laws still in effect in the deep South. Many were beaten, and others were arrested and jailed. Tracy Sugarman (1921-2013), well-known illustrator, chronicler of D-Day to the Civil Rights and literally hundreds of books, recorded this experience in his book "Stranger at the Gates."
