MODOTTI, TINA (1896-1942)
Untitled (Protest rally). Silver print, 4 3/4x6 3/4 inches (12.1x17.1 cm.), with Modotti''s "Photographs-Tina Modotti Mexico, D.F." hand stamp, on verso. Circa 1928

  • Notes: Political radical, artist, silent-film actress, and muse, Tina Modotti lived a life of passion, ideas, and expression. Born in Italy, Modotti immigrated to the United States in 1913, where she pursued a career in film. She subsequently met Edward Weston and became his protégé, model, and paramour. In 1923 the couple moved to Mexico City, where they befriended Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera and Manuel Alvarez Bravo and made photographs.

Modotti formed a powerful connection to her adopted home, photographing the vibrant revolutionary culture, which she actively became a part of. Many of Modotti''s best-known photographs, which date from this intense 3-year period, seamlessly blend a refined modernist sensibility with powerful social and political commentary.
