  • Notes: first edition. Deals very extensively with the Mormon settlement, in pages 251-265, 313-369, and 403-436. The author had served as governor of Illinois from 1842-1846, and his handling of the events surrounding the murder of Joseph Smith was a defining feature of his administration.
