Heber H. Thomas (1862-1926), photographer.

Mammoth portrait of Joseph F. Smith and the First Presidency.

Ogden, UT, 1902
Photograph, 16 x 13 inches, on original plain 20 x 16-inch mount; minimal wear; later owner's inscription and 2008 catalogue description on verso.

  • Notes: Standing at center is Joseph Fielding Smith, Sr. (1838-1918), who had been named the sixth president of the LDS Church the previous year. He was the son of Hyrum Smith, nephew of Joseph Smith, and had early childhood memories of his uncle and Nauvoo. Seated to the left is First Counselor John Rex Winder (1821-1910), and to the right Second Counselor Anthon Henrik Lund (1844-1921)--a Danish immigrant, and the first member of the First Presidency who was not a native English speaker.

Provenance: note from a great-great-granddaughter of Wilford Woodruff, explaining that it "was given to me as an inheritance"; F.G. Williams & Co. Mormon Experience catalogue, item 198, to the consignor Larry Faria, 2008.
