Mother Goose's Melodies . . . Every One Recently Found in the Same Stone Box which Holds the Golden Plates of the Book of Mormon.

Boston: Monroe and Francis, 1833
96 pages, almost all of them illustrated. Short 8vo, original illustrated wrappers, worn, crudely rebacked; wear and foxing to contents, lacking 4 leaves (pages 65-72); early children's signatures on endpapers, clipped signatures of "Woodruff" and "Smith" laid down on front pastedown and title page (not matching the signatures of the early Mormon patriarchs).

  • Notes: The first book with "The Book of Mormon" in its title was, of course, the 1830 Book of Mormon. The section was Alexander Campbell's 1832 response, "Delusions: An Analysis of the Book of Mormon." The third was this book of nursery rhymes, which is your strange fact for the day. They capitalized on the origins of the Book of Mormon to give the old-fashioned Mother Goose stories a bit of tongue-in-cheek aura of mystery. Rosenbach, Children's Books 784.

    Provenance: collection of Larry Faria.
