  • Notes: A legal response to a petition for a mechanics lien filed by John A. Forgeus against Hyrum Smith and associates Lucius Scovil and Noah Rogers. All four men were active in Nauvoo''s Masonic Lodge. "It is true that the said John A. Forges did furnish forty thousand bricks for the respondents . . . and did lay ninety thousand bricks for respondents . . . not being able to deny that the demand of plaintiff is just and proper consent that judgment be had in civil court against them . . . with a stay of execution until the first day of September AD 1844." Smith agreed to pay $400 for the work, but not for another year. He was assassinated the following June alongside his brother, before the judgment became due. Provenance: Sotheby''s Roy Crocker sale, 28 November 1979, lot 313.
