Morton; front hinge split, heavily annotated in pencil, trimmed to 140 mm affecting some annotations, bound with 16 blank leaves of notebook paper before title page and after final page, dampstaining on top edge, repaired tear to page 97 with no loss.   • Notes: "first edition published by the Reorganized Church, a division of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints protesting against the doctrine of polygamy . . . This edition served the Reorganized Church for many years, until new plates were made in 1897"--Sabin 83160; Flake 2943.
    The Iowa-based Reorganized Church branched off from the Mormons in 1860, became the Community of Christ in 2001, and now claims a quarter of a million members. This copy was formerly the property of William D. Morton, one of the early leaders of the church, and a founding president of its Council of Seventies. The annotations reflect the careful indexing and close reading of a church elder, and also include the record of an 1885 marriage recorded by Morton.     an important association copy of the first edition of the community of christ's book of scripture.
