(MORMONS.) Supplement to the Warsaw Signal.

(MORMONS.) Supplement to the Warsaw Signal. 4 pages, 22 1/2 x 16 inches, on one folding sheet; minor foxing, folds, light soiling and early manuscript docketing to one panel of front page. [Warsaw, IL, circa 15 November 1846]

  • Notes: In September 1846, a few months after most of the Mormons had left Nauvoo for a new life in Utah, a mob besieged the remaining Mormons, killing three. This special issue of the Warsaw Signal includes a lengthy "History of the Last Mormon War, Containing the Correspondence and Official Documents." It compiles dozens of letters, proclamations, and other documents relating to this incident from both the mob and the Illinois militia which tried to stop them. Many of the documents appear to be otherwise unpublished. Warsaw was a few miles downriver from Nauvoo, and a center of hostility to the Mormon settlement; the Signal was a virulently anti-Mormon newspaper for most of its existence.
The "History of the Last Mormon War" covers two and a half pages, followed by the "Chronicles of Obadiah the Hittite" (which appears to be a parody of the Book of Mormon), a long "Address to the Public" by the local anti-Mormon leaders dated 14 November, and other related articles. This supplement is given a separate entry in the on-line edition of Flake, 9616a, tracing only one extant copy at the New York Public Library. We trace no other examples of this (or any other) issue of the Warsaw Signal at auction.
