(MORMONS.) The Book of Mormon.

SECOND EDITION (MORMONS.) The Book of Mormon. 12mo, contemporary sheep, worn, upper head of backstrip chipped, lacking spine title; lacking 8 leaves near end including the testimony pages (leaves Z2-7 and Z10-11), a few pencil marks in margins, occasional spotting, rear free endpaper worn and detached; early owner's inscriptions on free endpapers and page 100. (MRS) Kirtland, OH: Oliver Cowdery for Parley Pratt & John Goodson, 1837

  • Notes: Second edition--the first to list Joseph Smith as translator rather than author, and the first printed within the faith. It was extensively revised from the first edition after comparison with the original manuscript. More than 3000 changes have been noted from the first edition, all of them carried forward into future editions.
Provenance: Original owner Thomas Alfred Judd (1802-1886) was a New York native who joined the LDS church in 1836 while living in Leeds, Ontario. He and his family did not settle with the main body of Mormons until 1841. His family register is recorded on the rear free endpaper, listing his wife Terrissa Hastings and their three eldest children. He died in Salt Lake City in 1886. On 1 September 1838, Judd sold this book to Moses Smith--possibly the Moses Smith (1800-1849), who was the first Mormon in Wisconsin. Crawley 35; Flake 596; Sabin 83039. One known at auction since 1998.
