  • Notes: David Whitmer (1805-1888) was one of the three witnesses who testified to seeing the angels delivering the golden plates to Joseph Smith, and in 1830 became one of the six founding members of the church. However, he was excommunicated in 1838, and remained in Missouri when Joseph Smith and the rest of the church moved on to Nauvoo. He later founded the small Whitmerite branch of the Church of Christ, which survived until 1961. with--three other autographs relating to the early period of the church: Receipt signed by F. Wilcox to Edward Farley, Commerce, IL (soon to become Nauvoo), 30 September 1839 (Farley lived in Commerce before the arrival of the Mormons, but soon became a member) * Document Signed by Missouri governor Lilburn W. Boggs (who issued the infamous 1838 "Extermination Order"), imposing a $200 fine. Jefferson, MO, 29 August 1839 * Document Signed by Judge Austin A. King (who presided over the 1838 trial of Joseph Smith). Richmond, MO, 15 October 1842. Provenance: all but the Commerce document sold by Gary Hendershott to the consignor, 27 August 1990.
