MORRIS, ROBERT. Autograph Letter Signed, "Rob't Morris," to merchants Carey & Tilghman, discussing the purchase of tobacco on behalf of Morris and at what price, requesting that they load their tobacco on the ship he contracted, and requesting that they sell bills of exchange on his behalf. 2 pages, 4to, with integral address leaf; faint scattered bleedthrough, folds. Philadelphia, 5 April 1787

  • Notes: "I . . . shall make due note of the several Articles of Accounts. I am obliged by the detail you give of Mr. Gilmore's reasoning which I dare say is not confined to him & Messrs Smith and I should not hesitate to concur with the price of 26/ but I am sensible that the same reasons will induce another rise to 27/ & then to 28/ & so on, this I have already experienced, however in order to try the project once more, I will now consent to your giving 26/ but I could wish your doing so were not understood to be for my account and if any thing will prevent a farther rise of your market, it will be the belief that your purchase is not for me, as it will then be considered as casual rather than permanent, & I assure you that I do this more from a desire to employ you than from any consideration of my own interest which would be best served by adhering to my own limits of 25/ 100# [price per 100 pounds] whether I get Tob[acc]o at Balt[im]o[re] or not. Messers Wallace & Co are under contract with me for Tab'o at 25/ 100# but perhaps what they buy at Balt'o may be intended for some other purpose. I am in treaty with Mr. Clarke of your place for the charter of his Ship to load at Annapolis. Should he accept of my terms & call on you, be pleased to put on board the Tob'o you have on hand as it will help to steady her. I want to remit money to my agents at Alexandria & Dumfries, therefore if you can sell bills on me or on London . . . or on Paris . . . you will keep doing so and I will supply the bills."
