(MOTORCYCLES.) Myers' Third Annual Motor Cycle Picnic.

(MOTORCYCLES.) Myers' Third Annual Motor Cycle Picnic. Pair of silver print photographs conjoined in one image as issued, 7 1/4 x 17 1/4 inches, on original plain mount with manuscript caption in white; a few small scrapes in image, 1/2-inch chip to mount, original framer's pencil notes on verso. [Williamsport, PA], 24 August 1913

  • Notes: A panoramic group photograph of an early motorcyclist gathering. The Indian logo can be clearly seen on several. The gathering's only woman rides in a sidecar, front and center. Behind her, another rider has several Williamsport pennants hanging from his handlebars. This photograph also appeared as the central image of a 1914 United States Motorcycle Tires advertisement, but this is an original 1913 photograph.

The Williamsport Sun-Gazette reported on the first annual picnic in its 26 July 1911 issue: "William R. Myers is arranging for a big picnic to be given . . . at Linden [near Williamsport]. He is sending invitations to every motorcycle owner or rider in this city and expects a big turnout. Mr. Myers will have a launch to take those who do not care to ride their machines to the cabin, while the others will breeze up. A special dinner will be prepared."

The picnic in the photograph was described in the 30 August 1913 issue of the same newspaper: "William A. Myers, the well-known sporting goods dealer, was a host at a recent gathering of motorcycle riders. . . . Naturally he is interested in the motorcycle business in this town, having sold this season nearly half a hundred Indians. That's the reason you see so many Indians flying about the city."
