MOZART, WOLFGANG AMADEUS. Autograph Musical Manuscript, unsigned, bars 52-70 of the sixth movement of his Serenade in D major, K. 185 (

TWO PAGES FROM SERENADE IN D MAJOR ("ANTRETTER") MOZART, WOLFGANG AMADEUS. Autograph Musical Manuscript, unsigned, bars 52-70 of the sixth movement of his Serenade in D major, K. 185 (167a), scored for two oboes/flutes, two horns, two trumpets, and strings with solo violin, working draft notated in brown ink on eight staves per page. Foliation/pagination numbers at upper right recto, in pencil, ("81", "35"), possibly in the hand of Leopold Mozart. 2 pages, oblong 4to (Köchel's "Klein-Querformat"); minor staining at edges. Np, [Vienna, July-August 1773]

  • Notes: The Serenade in D Major, written by a 17-year old Mozart, was likely composed as a Finalmusik piece--a serenade customarily performed in the summertime at Salzburg Benedictine University.
The leaf in the present lot was once bound by Leopold Mozart with 57 others in the "Cranz volume, no.1," containing the entirety of K. 185 as well as a march, K. 189 (167b). In 1975, the portion of the volume containing K. 185 was sold at a J.A. Stargardt auction, and over the years, the leaves of this portion have been further dispersed. Only two other leaves from the sixth movement have been located: one containing bars 9-24, and the other, bars 25-38 (Alan Tyson, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart: Neue Ausgabe sämtlicher Werke: Ser. X, Supplement; Werkgruppe 33: Dokumentation der Autographen Überlieferung; Abt. 2).
