Japanese-born Satomi moved to Paris in 1922, where he studied at the École des Beaux Arts. During his studies he was clearly influenced by the streamlined, Machine Age, Art Deco look of works by A.M. Cassandre. The first Oriental Tourist Conference was held in Tokyo in 1935, for the following year Satomi designed this poster to help promote the event using photomontage images of modes of transportation, a map and stylized ethnic figures from across the Orient.
