(MUSIC--MINSTRELSY.) Sanford's Opera House. Sanford's Opera Troupe.

(MUSIC--MINSTRELSY.) Sanford's Opera House. Sanford's Opera Troupe. Letterpress playbill, 21-1/2 x 8 inches; lacks a small portion at the top, obscuring the tops of a few letters in the word "Opera." [Philadelphia,] 1860

  • Notes: Samuel S. Sanford (1821-1905) was one of the earliest blackface minstrels, at his peak in the mid-nineteenth century. He published numerous collections of songs, in all, 36 works, appearing in 121 publications in 3 languages. The present playbill bears an excellent engraved vignette at the top showing a group of slaves playing music and dancing in a cabin. While numerous other playbills from Sanford's Opera Troupe are located in OCLC, we could find no copy of the present one.
