(MUSIC) SIMONE, NINA Group of thirteen Autograph Letters Signed Various sizes; some as short as an "aerogramme," while others stretch to as much as nine pages; one includes a few tiny snapshots. should be seen. Europe, 1977-1998

  • Notes: an exceptionally rich and personally revealing group of letters. written to a male friend while in self-exile during the decade of 1970 to 1980. Nina Simone (1933-2003), was born Eunice Kathleen Waylon in Tyron, North Carolina, one of eight children. Young Eunice exhibited prodigious musical talent, playing piano at the age of six. Encouraged by family and friends of the family, she continued her piano studies and briefly attended Julliard in New York City. Simone however, did not begin her singing career until 1954, when she played and sang at a piano bar in Atlantic City. There, she was "discovered, and within ten years and several recordings was considered one of the best of a new crop of jazz stylists. However the late 1960's brought serious problems with the IRS, her record label and her marriage. This combined with serious mental issues caused Simone to leave the United States. These letters, written for the most part from Switzerland have an almost "stream of consciousness" quality to them. Simone talks about her music, her relationships and life in general in an entirely uninhibited way, cursing unethical promoters and agents again and again.
