(MUSIC.) MINSTRELSY. West's World Wonder Shows.

(MUSIC.) MINSTRELSY. West's World Wonder Shows. Chromolithographic poster. Depicts a scene from a minstrel skit, featuring a golfer; 42x28 inches, creases where folded; tiny pin-hole at the conjunction of the folds; framed. Newport, KY: Donaldson Litho, circa 1900-1920

  • Notes: A most unusual poster, depicting what appear to be black men and women in a routine from a minstrel show. The men are in black-face; the women are simply light-skinned black women. We could find nothing at all about West's "World Wonder Show." It is definitely not part of Primrose and West's Minstrel Troupe, the only other group whose name was remotely like it. The Donaldson Litho Company was founded in 1883. It moved to Newport, Kentucky in 1898. Blackface minstrelsy was the first distinctly American theatrical form. In the 1830s and 1840s, it was at the core of the rise of an American music industry, and for several decades it provided the lens through which white America saw black America. On the one hand, it had strong racist aspects; on the other, it afforded white Americans a singular and broad awareness of significant aspects of black-American culture
