Various places, circa 1915-1980s
More than 200 items (0.4 linear feet); condition generally strong.

  • Notes: Helen Ward (1913-1998) was one of the iconic jazz singers of the 1930s. She came to prominence as Benny Goodman's vocalist in 1934, and was with him for the historic first jazz performance at Carnegie Hall in 1938, later released as the seminal album "The Famous 1938 Carnegie Hall Jazz Concert." Her musical career wound down by 1960, with a comeback circa 1979-1981. She was married four times, and appears here as Helen Wiltscheck, Helen Ward (her stage name), Helen Marx, Helen Ward Savory, and Helen Norman. Highlights include:

A copy of her birth certificate showing that Ward was a stage name, and she was born in Manhattan as Helen Wiltscheck in 1913 (three years earlier than generally reported).

Her copy of the program for a 1953 return Carnegie Hall jazz performance with Benny Goodman, with her name set off in pencil.

Lyrics to an apparently unpublished song, "You Deny," on a sheet of Waldorf-Astoria letterhead.

Pair of her passports, issued 1974 and 1980.

Plaque issued to Ward "in recognition of her musical contribution" by the Capital Historical Association, 1983.

Flier for her run at Marty's Garden Room with her manuscript set list on verso, September [1979].

A collection of approximately 200 family and professional photographs spanning virtually all of Ward's life, including 2 formal portraits from her childhood, several promotional photos and family portraits from her heyday, and an album of family snapshots from 1966 and earlier.

Provenance: acquired from her estate sale circa 2000 by the consignor.
