(MUSIC.) WILLIAMS, CHARLES "COOTIE." Two typed agreements Signed by Williams and legendary musical agent Irving Mills and a third document from the William Morris Agency taking up where the latter contract left off. Three 4to sheets, typed on one side each; creased where folded. New York, 1939

  • Notes: Two letters of agreement between "Cootie" Williams and Irving Mills. The present two documents constitute a three-year writing and performing agreement between Williams and Mills "Exclusive Publications.".A third document is from Morris Stoller of the William Morris agency notifying Mills that they were now Cootie Williams and his orchestra's exclusive agents. Williams (1910-1985), noted for his growling "jungle" style trumpet, played with virtually all of the great bands of the 1930s and '40s, including Chick Webb and Fletcher Henderson. Irving Mills, orchestra leader, booking agent extraordinaire and recording company owner, was also the lyricist for such hits as "Mood Indigo" and "It Don't Mean a Thing if it Ain't Got that Swing."
