  • Notes:
Myron Stout was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1969, which he used to visit mainland Greece and Crete in the spring of 1970. Stout had held a profound interest in Greek myths and literature and after his initial trip, he returned to Greece the same year and again in 1972. Stout drew small pencil drawings of landscapes and flowers from his hotel balconies and public gardens. Sphacteria, Pylos, the present drawing, was one of only two such drawings selected for Stout's landmark exhibition at the Whitney Museum of American Art in 1980. Sphacteria, also known as Sphagia, is a small island at the entrance to the bay of Pylos in the Greek Peloponnese region. Stout's Greek trips inspired the artist to create some of his most impressive, and majestic, biomorphic drawings, including Adam and Eve (1965-1972) in the collection of the Washington Art Consortium.
