NAHUM GUTMAN (1898-1980) [CELEBRATION OF THE CHILDREN''S ZOO / THE TEL AVIV ZOO.] 1947.
26 1/2x18 3/4 inches, 26 1/4x47 1/2 cm. Shlomi Printing Press, Tel-Aviv.
Condition B+: minor tears and abrasions at edges; creases in margins and image; scuffing in upper text: pin holes in corners; tape on verso. Paper.
Gutman, born in Russian, studied at the Bezalel school in Jerusalem before continuing his art studies in various European cities. Having such varied art training, he was able to develop a distinctive style that predominently reflected his Israeli influences - creating watercolor and oil paintings as well as public sculptures and mosaics around Tel Aviv. In fact, the Nahum Gutman Museum of Art opened in 1998 in Tel Aviv, and houses many of his artworks. A writer and children''s book illustrator, Gutman seamlessly translated his illustrating skills into poster design. This whimsical rendering of an elephant walking through the streets is one of at least two posters the artist created for the Children''s Zoo, the first one designed in the late 1930s.
