Half-titles. 2 volumes. 8vo, original gilt-pictorial blue cloth, spine ends bumped and nicked, cover corners rubbed; endpapers and fore edges foxed, contents otherwise clean. Westminster, 1897

  • Notes: first edition in english. Intentionally allowing the specially constructed Fram to become frozen in pack ice, Nansen sought to take advantage of the Arctic ice drift to cross the polar basin. After the ship had reached 84°04''N, he made an unsuccessful attempt to continue to the Pole by sledge, still attaining a record 86°14''N. "Nansen returned to international acclaim not only for the voyage itself but for its results, proof of a deep Arctic Ocean, free of any land masses or islands, and extensive data on magnetism, zoology, and oceanography"--Books on Ice 5.2 (this edition). Printing and the Mind of Man 384 (original edition in Norwegian, same year).
