(NAPOLEON SARONY) (1821-1896) Portrait of Oscar Wilde (1854-1900).

(NAPOLEON SARONY) (1821-1896)
Portrait of Oscar Wilde (1854-1900). Silver copy print, the image measuring 9½x5½ inches (24.1x14 cm.), with the sitter's credit in pencil and the Culver Pictures stamp, bar code, and label, on verso. 1882; printed circa 1910

  • Condition: Sarony's well-known portrait of Oscar Wilde is in good condition, with imperfections related to its Culver Pictures provenance. The photograph is rich and contrasty, with beautiful delineations of tone and detail within the figure.

The print is ferrotyped, and evidences the faint inconsistencies associated with that process. The surface of the print, particularly in raking light, also shows scattered soft half-moon and linear handling creases and impressions throughout, including tiny superficial chips at the edges and corners. These are not necessarily distracting when viewing directly at the image, but are visible, and consistent with the print's presentation and association with use and reproduction.

There is a spot of period retouching in the background in the upper left quadrant, two tiny specs of emulsion loss in the background in the right quadrant, a spec of residue to the right of Wilde's head, and a couple faint spots of discoloration at the far edges of the sheet. Finally, some trace ink transfer is visible at the lower edge.

While noted here for the purposes of a descriptive report, these imperfections are inherent to the image's use and contribute to the object qualities of the work.
