(NAPOLÉON.) BONAPARTE, NAPOLÉON EUGÈNE LOUIS. Autograph Letter Signed, "Napoléon," to [Louis] Conneau ("My dear Conneau"), in French,

SHORTLY BEFORE THE DEATH OF THE PRINCE IMPÉRIAL (NAPOLÉON.) BONAPARTE, NAPOLÉON EUGÈNE LOUIS. Autograph Letter Signed, "Napoléon," to [Louis] Conneau ("My dear Conneau"), in French, reporting that he has begun serving as an officer, stating that he felt his position is better for learning how to make war than accepting the offer of Commandant of a squadron, wondering about the views people have concerning his departure from France, expecting Conneau to defend his motives, and promising to send details of his military operations. 5 1/2 pages, 8vo, written on two folded sheets; short separations at folds, faint scattered foxing, small hole in first page touching text. Pietermaritzburg, 20 April 1879

  • Notes: ". . . Although the second part of the campaign has not yet begun I have already taken up my war armor in the three weeks since I disembarked. I am right now fulfilling the functions of officer of Etat Major for the General Commandant in chief . . . .
". . . I do not know how one will have interpreted my departure from France . . . .
"Neither the apprehensions of my mother nor the despair of the people who surrounded me . . . and all my partisans made me hesitate one minute nor lose one second . . . ."
Napoléon Eugène Louis Jean Joseph (1856-1879), called by many the "Prince Imperial," joined the British in the Anglo-Zulu War, where he was killed during an ambush on June 1, 1979; he was the only son of Napoléon III.
