Ordering agricultural improvements after the Revolt of Cairo

Napoléon

Document Signed, "Bonaparte," appointing Jean Reynier Inspector General in Egypt

and charging him with improving agricultural efficiency in the region, in French. 2 pages, folio, written on recto and verso of a single sheet; faint dampstaining at edges, folds.

Cairo, 12 December 1798.

  • Notes: The duties of the Inspector General are listed in separate articles: "His function will consist in making tours in each of the Provinces of Egypt; he will there acquaint himself with all the domain now belonging to the French Republic; . . . He will study the means of returning abandoned fields to cultivation and of perfecting and increasing irrigation . . . ."

In late October 1798, the citizenry of Cairo took up arms to resist the occupation of their city by the French Republican army. While hundreds of the French were killed during the ensuing violence, including a commander and Napoléon's own Aide-de-camp, Joseph Sulkowski, many thousands of civilians were killed or injured before the uprising was successfully suppressed.
