With explorations of northwest Greenland and Ellesmere Island, Nares''s 1875-76 attempt at the North Pole via Smith Sound was the first significant British Arctic expedition following the search for Franklin. Although failing to attain the Pole, the expedition achieved record latitudes for both ship (82º28''N) and sledge (83º20''26"N) and became the first to reach Cape Columbia, the northernmost point of land in the Canadian Arctic.
