SZWEDZICKI PORFOLIO (NATIVE AMERICAN ART.) O. B. Jacobson; and D'Ucel, Jeanne. Les Peintres Indiens D'amérique / Indian American Painters. Text in French and English. 41 colorful pochoir plates of ceremonial dance and objects, artwork, and costume by American Indian artists. Folio, plates and two descriptive booklets (one each in French and English) laid into publisher's gilt-lettered blue cloth portfolio with cloth ties, light wear to joints and hinges, some mild discoloration and rubbing to covers; plates generally clean with occasional scattered very minor soft creases and toning, but overall bright and clean. Nice: Éditions d'Art, C. Szwedzicki, 1950

  • Notes: number 126 of 750 copies signed by szwedzicki in the French language booklet. the scarcest and most sought-after of the six szwedzicki indian portfolios, this work, which focuses on the Pueblos, Navajos, and Apaches, was immediately snatched up by museums, libraries, and collectors. Part I contained fewer plates and is equally difficult to obtain. Szwedzicki published his first portfolio, Kiowa Indian Art, in 1936 at a time when American Indian painting of the West and Southwest began to emerge as a distinct and important movement in American modern art. Included here are works by Julian Martinez, Abel Sanchez, Romando Vigil, Awa Tsireh, Velino Herrera, and Fred Kaboti and previously unrepresented female artists Marina Lujan (Pop Chalee), Geronima Cruz Montoya, Eva Mirabal, Tonita Peña, and Pablita Velarde.
