Album entitled "H. M. S. 'Orlando,' 1st Class Cruiser, Commissioned at Portsmouth. February 16th, 1899" containing 33 photographs of sailors and officers aboard ship, including carpenters, gunnery and torpedo staff, men operating guns, marine detachments, navigators, and men with rifles. Printing-out paper prints, 8 1/4x11 1/4 inches (21x28.76 cm.) or the reverse, some with captions, in pencil, on the mounts; cornered to the mounts. Oblong folio, cloth with gilt title label affixed to front cover, light wear. 1899

  • Notes: The Orlando, commanded by Captain J. H. T. Burke, played an important role in the Boxer Rebellion where it was one of the first cruisers to arrive on the scene when the rebellion broke out. The ship participated in battles in Peking and Tientsin. There were many casualties, including the death of Captain Burke, during the journey home.
