(NAVY.) Quarter bill for the U.S.S. Levant in the West Indies.

(NAVY.) Quarter bill for the U.S.S. Levant in the West Indies. 36 manuscript pages. 18mo, stitched; moderate dampstaining, minor wear. No place, circa 1838-42

  • Notes: The Levant was an American sloop of war patrolling in the West Indies. It is most remembered for its mysterious disappearance in 1860. This volume lists all of the Levant's officers and crew, their quartering arrangements, and their station assignments in the event of combat. The sloop was captained by Joseph Smoot. First Lieutenant Sydney Smith Lee is mentioned twice. He was an older brother of Robert E. Lee and later served as a captain in the Confederate navy.

With--3 letters by James H. Moore (listed as a midshipman on the quarter bill), who later rose to the rank of lieutenant, all to his brother Charles, 1848 and 1860; and papers concerning his 1860 death in Lima, Peru. In one 1860 letter, Moore complains about a future Civil War commodore in the United States Navy, William David Porter: "I do not care to serve under the command of Capt. Porter, who is not a gentleman."
