  • Notes: Benjamin Waldron Vanderpoel (1836-1878) was a New York attorney and served as an army captain in the Civil War, spending some months in the Libby and Andersonville prisons. He is best known to history as an acquaintance of John Wilkes Booth, and testified to seeing Booth at a tavern on the afternoon of Lincoln's assassination. After the war he joined the navy in an effort to regain his health. He served aboard the USS Ticonderoga, a screw sloop in the European Squadron. He spent nearly three years sailing about the Mediterranean and elsewhere, keeping a personal travel journal which he apparently transcribed into this "abstract." His detailed index of ports-of-call includes the expected visits to Italy, Greece, Egypt, and Spain, but also diversions to Turkey, Sweden, England, Liberia, and more. In Gibraltar, he noted "the followers of the Prophet and of Jesus of Nazareth mingling freely together in the common pursuit of filthy lucre" (page 34). The ship picked up a crew of 18 African laborers in Monrovia, Liberia (page 89) who boarded the ship from their canoes while it was in full steam; Vanderpoel lists their names as entered by the paymaster, including Jim Crow, Jack Frypan, and Tom Upsidedown. They are described as speaking "an English gibberish, uttering when speaking a peculiar harsh guttural sound." Laid down on the inside rear cover is Vanderpoel's April 1869 power of attorney to allow one Silvanus Haywood to secure publication of the abstract, but this was apparently never done. It remains an engaging Atlantic travel journal within the unusual context of a naval cruise.
