  • Notes: Free Acres was a utopian community founded in Scotch Plains, NJ in 1910 according to the single-tax principles of Henry George. This archive was compiled by Free Acres resident Edith Wright Schulze (1892-1990) and her husband Max. Highlights include the charming Free Acres map by Eudoxia and Walter Brown (pictured) * An address book listing the Hollywood and New York addresses of the most famous Free Acres resident, actor James Cagney * A hand-colored 1922 holiday card by illustrator Will Crawford, another resident * 8 copies of the community's 1930 anniversary group photograph * and other snapshots from the community's early years.
