(NEW JERSEY.) Archive spanning several generations of the Zabriskie family of Paramus and Ridgewood. Approximately 250 items sleeved in 4 binders (0.8 linear feet); condition varies but generally strong. Various places, circa 1762-1925

  • Notes: These papers relate to descendants of Albert Zabriskie, one of the founders of Paramus, NJ; and allied families. They were one of the first distinguished Polish families in America. Some of the figures mentioned in the collection include Jacob H. Zabriskie (1772-1844), Jacob's son Abraham J. Zabriskie (1816-1901), and Abraham's grandson Everett L. Zabriskie (1878-1927). The collection consists largely of deeds and estate records from Paramus and other Bergen County towns, circa 1762-1864; genealogical research relating to the Zabriskie, Terhune, Board, and other Bergen County families, compiled circa 1890-1920; and printed ephemera from Ridgewood, NJ and other towns circa 1910-1930. Highlights include:

A small group relating to the Jersey City Yacht Club, including their 1874 printed by-laws (none recorded in OCLC), 1866 manuscript incorporation papers, and leases dated 1888 and 1892.

A petition for a new commuter railroad station between Hohokus and Ridgewood, NJ with several dozen signatures, late 19th century.

A pair of large plat maps of land in Paramus, 1772, and along Saddle River, 1813.

An 1813 militia commission signed by Governor Aaron Ogden.

    A 1786 poem in Dutch.

A long letter from John Frederick Ernst to Lucas Van Buskirk describes his efforts to found a Lutheran church in Cooperstown, NY, 24 July 1801; quite defective.

A binder of 48 sleeved photographs, most of them mounted in large formats, many captioned as representing Bergen County homes and views, a few marked by E.L. Zabriskie as photographer, most circa 1890-1915.

Carbon typescript created in 1909 of an important unpublished 1767 diary by Francis Grant titled "Journal of a Tour from the City of New York to Canada."
