New Masses Magazine.
Twenty issues, September 1929-August 1932.

New York: New Masses, Inc., 1929-1932.

Comprising the following issues: September-December 1929, January-December 1930, January and February 1931, and August 1932; each in original illustrated stapled wrappers; (all evenly toned but otherwise clean and well preserved); 11 3/4 x 8 3/4 in.

New Masses, the leading periodical of the American left, began as a cultural magazine that peaked in circulation during the Great Depression, when people sought solace in socialist and leftist ideas. The magazine's widespread popularity from 1929 to 1934 attracted contributions from prominent figures in literature, art, and intellectual circles, including Upton Sinclair, Ralph Ellison, Dorothy Parker, Langston Hughes, and more. The magazine also championed the proletariat voice, publishing articles and artwork by people around the world. These are examples of its most sought-after monthly issues, which editor Mike Gold began releasing weekly in 1934, shifting the focus from cultural content to purely political messaging.
