(NEW YORK CITY -- AMERICAN REVOLUTION.) The Lottery Magazine; or, Compleat Fund of Literary, Political and Commercial Knowledge. For September, 1776. Engraved plate and folding map, pages 115-160. 8vo, 8 1/2x5 1/2 inches, stitched into modern printed wrappers; generally clean. London: Johnson and Co., 1776

  • Notes: Scarce British pamphlet containing contemporary news excerpts and rumblings of American freedom unfolding, illustrated with a fine map of New York City.

All but buried in the "Foreign and Domestic Intelligence" portion on page 160: New-York. July 11. On Wednesday last the declaration of independence was read at the head of each brigade of the continental army, posted at and near New-York, and every where received with loud huzzas, and the utmost demonstrations of joy. The same evening the equestrian statue of George III, which tory pride and folly raised in the year 1770, was, by the sons of freedom, laid prostrate in the dirt. The lead wherewith this monument was made, is to be run into bullets to assimilate with the brains of our infatuated adversaries, who to gain a pepper corn, have lost an empire - "Quos Deus vult perdere prius dementat."

The modestly-sized but genuinely rare map details the streets of lower Manhattan from the Battery to approximately Grand Street with nothing but farmland extending to its north. A legend of 28 public buildings is keyed throughout the blocks, including the college, prison, markets, churches, and synagogue.
