Numerous woodcut illustrations. 8 pages (50 x 35 inches), uncut on one 100 x 70-inch sheet; minor soiling on front panels, slight separations at folds and some short tears, some edge wear, but generally stable and attractive. New York, 4 July 1859

  • Notes: The largest newspaper of the century.

First and only issue of this impressive literary newspaper, which folds out to more than eight feet. Includes pieces by Longfellow, Bryant, and other noteworthy authors, but remembered mainly as a feat of extreme printing. Editor Roberts boasted that "a sheet of any greater length and breadth would be absolutely unmanageable. . . . It will be the pride of every true-hearted American and the wonder of Europe." "The largest newspaper I have seen . . . a wonderful production"--Moore's Historical, Biographical, and Miscellaneous Gatherings (1886). "Spattered with big multi-column woodcuts, indicating that it must have been printed flatbed from the forme"--Hutt, The Changing Newspaper (1973). Its size was finally surpassed by a Belgian newspaper in 1993. Not recommended for reading on the subway.
