(NEW YORK CITY.) An intriguing Dutch manuscript which apparently discusses the 1664 invasion of New Amsterdam by the English.

(NEW YORK CITY.) An intriguing Dutch manuscript which apparently discusses the 1664 invasion of New Amsterdam by the English. 2 manuscript pages, 8 1/2 x 6 3/4 inches, on one sheet; moderate dampstaining and minor wear. [New Amsterdam, NY?], nd and 1665-66

  • Notes: On one side of this sheet is a 19-line account in Dutch which describes on the fourth line "der Engelsche om de overgave van de Stadt N. Amsterdam"--the surrender of New Amsterdam to the English. Although we have been unable to translate the remainder of the document, the handwriting is comparable to surviving examples by Peter Stuyvesant's councilor Nicasius De Sille. On the verso is a list of 23 account payments, possibly for taxes, from March 1665 to August 1666. The names are all Dutch, including some recognizable as New Netherlands residents such as Gerrit Hendricksen (1620-1685) of New Amsterdam, and Teunis de Metsalaer (1644-1698), a mason from Rensselaerwyck who made the largest payment. Provenance: Radford B. Curdy auction, Pleasant Valley, NY, 13 January 2007. Also in Curdy's collection was a 1652 Peter Stuyvesant-signed deed which bore a matching water stain.
