(NEW YORK CITY.) Archive of Trinity Church organist Edward Hodges and his family. 18 items including diary, correspondence and other papers; various sizes and conditions, no general condition problems. Vp, 1841-95 and 1921

  • Notes: Edward Hodges (1796-1867) was an English-born organist and composer best known for his work at New York's Trinity Church from 1846 to 1858. This collection sheds light on his life and career, and includes his son's wonderful New York diary. The full contents:
Autograph Letter Signed from Edward Hodges to daughter Faustina, written while convalescing in the country. "I still play the hurdy-gurdy at church, & the country folk seem to think I play pretty well . . . Last Sunday, I was at once Organist, Bellows-Blower and Choir. There was no 'we' in the case." Illustrated with humorous clippings. Woodlawn, 22 December 1858.
Diary of son Asaph Hodges (1835-1924), 111 pages, kept intermittently from 1849 to 1852. At age 15: "I have been made a teacher in Dr. Anthon's school, an important event in my life, and yesterday I was obliged to teach all day. . . . I used the rattan today to keep the scholars in order" (25 April 1850). Baseball buffs will be interested in Asaph's 1 June 1850 class visit to the alleged birthplace of the game in Hoboken: "We walked some distance to the Elysian Fields . . . scampered about, played ball, had rides, went in the woods." The 12 July 1850 entry includes a drawing of a flag festooned with black crepe for President Taylor's funeral. Frequent references to "the President" are apparently to his step-mother's brother Nathaniel F. Moore, president of Columbia University. Music and Trinity Church, of course, both figure prominently.
Other family papers: Program for Edward Hodges' anthem in memory of President Harrison, 1841 * 4 manuscript poems by Edward Hodges, including "Squabble between the Pulpit & the Organ," and three of his published poems, 1853-56 * Autograph Letter Signed from Asaph Hodges to Edward Hodges. Waterbury, CT, 20 June 1864. * Obituary of Edward Hodges, heavily annotated by a family member, 1867 * Hodges family register transcribing births and deaths from 1724 through 1887 * Photograph of Asaph Hodges as an adult, circa 1890 * Obituary of Faustina Hodges, [1895] * 2 Autograph Letters Signed from Asaph Hodges to granddaughter, 1921 * Detailed manuscript explication of a Hodges composition by his daughter Faustina H. Hodges.
