Notes: These volumes document the taking of land by the city of New York to extend three streets. Includes transcripts of the pertinent New York Supreme Court rulings, summaries of deeds, estimates of damages and benefits to property owners, meeting minutes, and more. The streets dealt with here include an extension of 28th Street from 4th through 10th Avenues (including the present Fashion Institute of Technology campus) and the extension of Centre Street from Pearl to Reade (the midst of today''s downtown city court complex).
Most importantly, one volume relates to the extension of 42nd Street. While this was not a particularly noteworthy street in 1836, it is now home to such Manhattan landmarks as Times Square, the Chrysler Building, and the main branch of the New York Public Library. As an example, the estimate of benefits calculates that the estate of Thomas Burnside received $35 in benefits from its new road frontage by the corner of 42nd Street and 4th Avenue, where Grand Central Station is today. -
