Frank Fortunato.

Swank's New York Guide to Drugs, Violence and Prostitution.

No place, circa 1980
[16] illustrated pages (numbered pages [59] to [74] including wrappers, so apparently issued as a magazine insert), 10 x 8 inches, staple-bound, minimal wear.

  • Notes: A detailed guide to sex work and the drug trade in Manhattan by neighborhood, with anecdotal description of common practices. It offers detail on where the trans sex workers could be found (page [63]); another section on page 69 is headed "For Gays Only."

You may well regard this publication as misogynistic trash, but it is also important documentation of New York's sex trade workers and drug trade. It is undated but apparently dates from the early 1980s. A 1977 heroin war is mentioned on page 67, and a "recent" 1979 Sixty Minutes piece on the "Minnesota Strip" is discussed on page 72. The methadone clinic on Second Avenue mentioned on page [63] is discussed in newspapers from 1981 to 1988.

    No other examples traced.
