(NEW YORK CITY.) Greene, George Sears. Small archive concerning a proposed tunnel under the East River. 9 items including letters received, retained drafts of letters by Greene, and estimates; various sizes and conditions, most in excellent condition. New York, 1872-73

  • Notes: George Sears Greene (1801-1899) was a Union brigadier general in the Civil War, best known for his defense of Culp's Hill at the Battle of Gettysburg. After the war, he was a notable civil engineer in New York. This small archive relates to a proposed tunnel project that would have extended from Manhattan's 7th Avenue under the East River to Morrisania (now the Bronx). The project was never launched, and the Macombs Dam Bridge was built in approximately the same location in 1895, very near where Yankee Stadium now stands.
These papers include Greene's estimate for the tunnel project, a draft letter he wrote to Frederick Law Olmstead offering suggestions, and a letter from rival engineer William H. Grant disputing some of Greene's preferences. Two items are signed by Greene. A detailed contents list is available upon request.
